First, you should build the frame of the cold frame. As you can see in the image, you should use 1×6 boards and lock them together thoroughly. From our experience, tongue and groove boards are the best choice, as they connect together properly.

Lock the components together with 2×2 lumber and galvanized screws. We strongly recommend you to drill pilot holes trough the slats before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Align the components at both ends, if you want to get the job done as a professional. In addition, fit a basic frame on the middle of the cold frame, to reinforce the whole structure properly.

Next, build a lid using 2×2 lumber, as in the image. Drill pilot holes trough the long components and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the short ones. In addition, cut a small Chanel in the frame, 3/4 x 3/4″.

Afterwards, cut two piece of polycarbonate and fit them inside the frame. Secure them into place with wood screws and wood glue.

After building the lid, you should secure it to the cold frame with metal hinges. Nevertheless, make sure you align the lid properly, before locking it into place. Check if the lid opens properly and install a vent opener if you want to save time. It is necessary to ventilate the diy cold frame during hot days, so installing a vent opener will reduce the work.

As you can see, choosing the right free cold frame plans and using proper materials (cedar, pine or redwood) is the right way to start a woodworking project. If you use quality tools and you know the basic techniques, the end result cannot be anything else but a success.
